OT (Operational Technology) refers to the hardware and software that monitors and controls physical industrial processes — PLCs, SCADA systems, HMIs, industrial control systems. IT (Information Technology) refers to the business computing environment — servers, workstations, ERP, email, cloud. Historically, OT and IT ran on separate, isolated networks. As industrial businesses connect them to enable data sharing and monitoring, OT systems become reachable from the IT network — and since most OT systems can't be patched or run modern security software, a threat that enters from the IT side can reach production systems with no resistance. OT/IT segmentation creates a defined, monitored boundary between the two environments — allowing data to flow where it adds value while preventing IT-sourced threats (particularly ransomware) from reaching production systems.
