From Survival Mode to CEO: Robert Joyce’s Journey to Building Gradius IT Solutions
What does it take to build a business when there is no safety net, no perfect roadmap, and no guarantee of success?
For Robert Joyce, Founder and CEO of Gradius IT Solutions, the answer has always been simple: keep moving forward. Robert recently joined Ali J. Taylor of Wisdom+Wayfinder and Frank Maiorana of JustWorks on the Scaling Smarter show to share his journey—from becoming a young father and entering the technology industry to spending more than two decades in financial IT and eventually taking the leap to build his own company. His story is not about following a carefully planned path to entrepreneurship. It's about responsibility, hard work, learning under pressure, surrounding yourself with the right people, and continuing to move forward when things get difficult.
A Different Path Into Technology
Robert's journey into technology began when he was still in high school. At 17, going on 18, he became a father while many of his friends were preparing to leave for college. With new responsibilities and a family to support, Robert had to make an important decision about his future.
Instead of following the traditional college path, he attended computer school and began building a career in networking and technology. His early work included data centers and network operations, giving him hands-on experience with the technology that would eventually become the foundation of his career.
One lesson became deeply ingrained in Robert early on: nobody was going to outwork him. Because he did not have a traditional college degree, he felt that he needed to work harder and continually prove himself. Over time, he realized that the lack of a degree did not hold him back—but the work ethic and determination he developed stayed with him.
Building a Career in High-Pressure Financial IT
Robert's career took a major step forward following the September 11 attacks. He was brought onto a team helping rebuild Merrill Lynch's damaged trading floor. After working on the project, his work led to additional opportunities, and he became a consultant running technology projects for the organization.
Over the next 23 years, Robert built extensive experience working in financial markets and financial IT.
He worked his way through virtually every level of technology—from hands-on support tasks to building and managing technology environments for firms.
But working in the financial industry also taught him something that would later become central to Gradius IT Solutions:
Speed, responsiveness, and customer service matter.
Taking the Leap and Betting on Himself
After more than two decades in financial technology, Robert decided to take a chance on himself and build Gradius IT Solutions. Leaving the corporate world meant stepping beyond his technical expertise and learning the challenges of entrepreneurship, from managing clients and operations to hiring, growth, and strategy.
Driven by a desire to take control of his future, Robert embraced the opportunity to build something of his own and shape the direction of the company.
From a One-Man Shop to Building a Team
Like many entrepreneurs, Robert initially handled everything himself, from client support and technology issues to passwords, hardware, and daily operations. However, he soon realized that working in the business full-time left little room to work on its growth. With guidance from mentors, he began building the systems, team, and support structure needed to scale Gradius IT Solutions. Today, with a 24/7 support desk and additional technical resources, Robert can focus more on leadership, strategy, client relationships, and growth while ensuring client success and satisfaction. Gradius goes beyond being just an IT vendor by building long-term partnerships and helping clients plan for the future through technology strategy, cybersecurity, AI, automation, and proactive IT solutions.
From Survival Mode to Building Something Bigger
Robert Joyce’s journey to becoming CEO of Gradius IT Solutions was anything but traditional.
From becoming a young father and building his career from the ground up to working in financial technology and eventually starting his own business, his journey has been shaped by challenges, hard work, and perseverance. His mindset has always been simple: keep moving forward. Today, Robert is focused on growing Gradius, building the right team, strengthening client relationships, embracing new technology, and continuing to help businesses succeed—proving that sometimes the path to success starts in survival mode and grows through the determination to never give up.
